With a brand-new, state-of-the-art , multi-purpose stadium under construction and a plan to give fans the ultimate African experience at the World Cup, Fan Parks will be set up around the city. Cape Town is ready to show the world a fantastic time.

THE STADIUM
With more than 2 000 construction workers on site, the new Green Point Stadium in Cape Town is well underway – and on schedule for completion by December 2009. The 68 000 seat stadium will be ready for inspection by FIFA executives by the end of October 2009 and meets all FIFA and Environmental Impact Assessment requirements. Tenders for Facility Operations and Naming Rights for the state-of-the-art venue are currently being received and the stadium will be officially commissioned in December 2009. It will then host preparatory events between February and April 2010, including a ‘Grand Opening’ function.

Set in an 85-hectare urban sports park that caters for seven different sports codes and includes a golf course and a public recreation precinct, the new stadium lies virtually at the foot of majestic Table Mountain, and is only a few hundred metres from the famous Sea Point seafront promenade. This world-class venue has been designed not only to offer football fans an unforgettable experience, but also with a view towards giving the people of Cape Town a beautiful and versatile location for a variety of sporting and other events for decades after the final whistle has been blown in the 2010 FIFA World Cup™.

In addition to the regular seats, the stadium can accommodate up to 150 corporate suites and 2 000 premium business club seats, making this the perfect venue for companies to host their clients. It’s also within easy walking distance of the city centre and the major road and rail transport hub. A dedicated pedestrian Fan Route will ensure that ticket holders have easy access to the event and can begin to soak up the electric atmosphere and African culture before they even reach the stadium.

The signature saddle-back design provides a floating-style roof that includes a ring of fire effect. Plenty of parking, much of it under cover, and careful attention to security and access control rounds off the picture of Cape Town’s newest and most prestigious addition.

The stadium, which is being built at a cost of just under R4-billion, will host eight FIFA World Cup™ matches, one of which will be a semi-final. There is no doubt that this new stadium is also set to become the premier destination in South Africa for sports, cultural, music, entertainment and community events, with the potential to attract millions of international and domestic visitors to Cape Town for decades to come.

Three more Fan Parks will be located at the all-weather Bellville Velodrome, Athlone Stadium and the Swartklip Sports Complex – so there’s enough room for both residents and visitors to enjoy all the action.

Pre- and post-match entertainment will be the order of the event with Cape Town’s best artists and international performers keeping your spirits high, regardless of how your team performs on the day.
